Our workshops follow the guiding principles established by Pat Schneider's Amherst Writers and Artists. In Schneider's powerful book entitled Writing Alone and With Others she says "In the best of all possible writing worlds, we have a community of supportive friends who evoke and respond to our writing in ways that strengthen our writing and strengthen us. For every writer, however, writing practice (a free write, first draft, diary, journal, or circle of writers) must become a safe place to write the soul's secrets and begin to heal the heart's wounds. Only then can it also become the womb where powerful writing is conceived." Although Quick Start is a writing workshop and not a therapy group, our writing is often healing.
Pat Schneider's AWA principles are the principles upon which all our Quick Start Writing Workshops are founded.
Come along on a journey of self-exploration that's fun and inspiring. Write in response to guided, thought-provoking prompts. Your thoughts may evolve into poems, memoirs, essays, short stories, novels - or remain treasured just as they are. Your writing will not be judged or critiqued. Your words and your wishes will always be honored here. What's written or discussed in workshop remains in workshop.
Class Format
In our busy lives Quick Start Writing Workshops often provide the only format in which we can stop long enough to indulge in a few moments of silence, allowing us to discover the power and importance of our own thoughts and words.
Class Structure
You may share your writing with others by reading it aloud - or not. You're the boss. Share the powerful energy of writers writing together in this safe, fun, creative, and supportive environment. Bring pen, paper and a friend. Or bring only yourself and indulge in some special time away from home, work, or school.
Facilitator
Award-winning Writing Coach, Pat Tyler, M.A., has published fiction and non-fiction in newspapers, magazines and anthologies across the country.
Trained by Pat Schneider, founder of Amherst Writers and Artists and author of Writing Alone and with Others, Tyler brings Schneider's methods to all Quick Start Writing Workshops.
She is a member of California Writer's Club, Redwood Branch, and served as Editor for their 2008 Anthology, Vintage Voices. She served as Judge for Romance Writers of America, Berkeley Branch, in their 2010 Competition. Her essays and memoirs have won several awards in Writer's Digest's Annual Competitions.
A novelist, Pat attended the University of Oxford, England in 2007 as a student of Professor Chris Sykes, completing his Summer Creative Writing Course, The Art of Lying.
She is currently marketing her first novel, The Impossible Promise, and its adaptation to a screenplay by the same name (co-authored with her daughter, Margo Tyler.) She's also completing her second novel, Forgive Us Our Trespasses.
However, in her Quick Start Writing Workshops, Pat will not be teacher/author. Instead she will be a writer helping writers, a colleague, a confidante, a cheerleader, a fellow writer and a friend. It is her strong belief that Quick Starters will be teaching her a thing or two!
